Projects

In the UK, we have 13% of the world’s peatlands – we fight above our weight – and peatlands are one of the world’s most powerful natural weapons against climate change.

Healthy peatlands sequester carbon, support biodiversity, improve water quality, and naturally protect against floods. But our peatlands in the UK are so degraded and mismanaged that they are currently a source of greenhouse gas emissions. We need to turn that around.

Peatlands are our rainforests. By restoring these unlikely climate change heroes, we can make the UK one of the world’s centres for carbon-removal and climate mitigation.

OUR PROJECT

Rebel Restoration is supporting Bradford Metropolitan City Council, Moors For The Future (a Peak District National Park-led consortium of peatland restoration experts), four experienced local community organisations and the University of Leeds at Ilkley Moor, a small iconic moorland and Site of Special Scientific Interest in West Yorkshire.

We will be restoring degraded peatland and wetland areas, and the wider ecosystem, to remove carbon from the atmosphere and improve wildlife diversity on the moor.

Throughout we’ll be guided by the expertise of Moors For The Future and Leeds University, recognised world leaders in the science and restoration of wetland and peatland habitats.
